L04: Footage Log

L04: Evaluation

When our group for Uni 15 started this unit, we knew straight away where we wanted to take things with this music video, exactly what we wanted to create and who we wanted the video to appeal to. The audience people who love 90s acid house music and especially the ones who lived through it to let them know acid house wont ever die and will live on for as long as possible. The audience for the music video as both male-females 16+ but mainly the males and females that had a first hand experience in acid house so 40+. The genre of the music/music video is electronic/acid, which is why we chose 16+ while also choosing the 40+ year old age gap as well. This allows us to connect to the young audience to try and still promote the sound while also being a blast from the past for the older audience that were brought up dancing in warehouses to this music.

We based our narrative on the insane movements of Charles Manson and the Manson Family as the song has samples of Manson talking and the girls from the Manson family laughing. We chose to have these copyright free clips inside the video as it connotes the craziness and correlation to the family throughout the song so what better way to link this together than to have these clips inside the music video. the song is called 'Sines' and it is the first single to the new 'Sixteen Squares' project. The artist comes across as very isolated, alone from the world and also very spooky, as if he doesn't want to be known by the world, hence the mask. The artist is wearing his hood up with a mask and located in a very discreet area, no one truly knows where the artist is in the world due to the blinds being closed. We did this as the Manson family killings were always placed inside houses with closed blinds so no one on the outside could look in, not only related to the Manson theme throughout but also the artist wanting to keep himself hidden throughout this project.

The camera work has definitely worked in our favour for the creation and final video as it links to the genre, narrative and storyboards created. Low shots to show the artist superiority, close ups to get up close and personal with the artist to take the viewer out their comfort zone. We also added close ups of Charles Manson while he is talking angrily in the build up on the bridge to get fast paced and create an uncomfortable and un easy feeling for viewer during the build up throughout the song.

When editing the music video for the artist we used Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2019999, we used this because the software is a professionally made and used software. We used the minimal of post production effects as we shot the whole music video with a filter on, did all our shot types and angles how we wanted them and shot the blurry clips out of focus. this just makes the video a lot purer and start to end. The video changes to the beat of the song or sometimes the bassline to keep that easy view while the clips uncomfortable for the viewers, it also looks a lot more professional than having the shots change not in time to the song. We used the snip tool to cut down and crop some of the clips we didn't want in there or to cut down clips to get in time with the beat during post production. All of this helps the narrative of the video we have planned,

L04: Evidence of contact with artist and feedback.

Based on my feedback I will be carrying on doing what I am doing, averagely fast pace cuts, videos of Charles Manson and the artist on the studio, the client Sixteen Squares is clearly very happy with the draft he has been sent and has no negative feedback, improvements or things to change.

Here was the last contact email with Sixteen Squares, showing that I had finished the music video for him and asked for feedback, by the looks of things the artist is very happy with the video as he explains he "loves it" and says "that's great!" which I could not be more pleased about, the response was amazing and I am very happy I have done my best for him.

Overall the feedback we got for our music video was pretty good, some very strong comments on the effects and the narrative which was really nice to hear back and see that people actually understood the meaning behind the video. Some improvements were given in which I wish I got before the release but this makes me realise I should do the feedback before release. So overall the feedback was positive and the client is happy.

Strengths:
- Visuals
- Effects
- Clips
- Narrative

Improvements:

- More clips of Manson.

L01: Visual Promos

Promotional Video

This video is a promotional video for Archy Marshall's new album 'A NEW PLACE 2 DROWN' this video is a short cut video of what the artist has been unto white recording the video, who helped and exactly why he has made the video. This promotional video is made for people to recognise the album before it is released so that they are aware when it is out, this will help bring the artist money in as he has promoted it to the target audience before releasing the album and book.
This video creates excitement for the release of this project as Archy uses his artwork through it and a sniper of a song off the album, this gives the target audience a sneak peak into what they get from purchasing the album or book. Archy using his artwork also promotes the book as the book is for his artwork and photographs he has created, this also bring more money in for the book as well as the album.
The video also engages the target audience because it shows Archy and his friends messing about, having fun and what they are unto everyday in-between creating music and artwork, this helps engage the target audience (fans) because they will be interested on what the artist is uptown now he is becoming famous.
Archy has decided to promote his video on youtube which is a platform used by a mass audience, which means it will also be the best place to be promoted and to get out to audiences in time for its release.
The target audience for this video is 16-25+ as Archy and his friends are ages 16-25 and their music tries to aim at people in the same situations with a similar life. Production techniques used in this promotional video are tension building, they use a short clip off one of the songs from the new album in the video and the artwork they create all the way through the video. This video is structured to play out a short story on Archy's life/time recording the album 'ANP2D' from the start Archy is reading a poem from his book and then it goes onto his mother talking about them as kids and what she does to give and insight onto their life, then towards the end it shows him having a good time with his friends.

Promotional Video Game Trailer

This is a promotional video game trailer 'Forza Horizon 4' in this trailer Forza give in game 4K quality gameplay, the purpose for this trailer is to promote the new car racing game to the target audience so that they can spread out the message to everyone in time for the release date, in doing this Forza will attract a mass audience as they have enough money to advertise it on television, youtube, public transport and many more. Advertising this product before the release date will also help as they have shown teasers of the game play, this makes the target audience want to see more and the only way they can do that is by purchasing the product bringing in Forza more and more money in a shorter amount of time through the advertisements they have brought out many weeks before.
This video creates excitement for the target audience as Forza show the different content involved E.G. rally cars in the snow, supercars in Italy, classic cars on the streets etc. By doing this Forza give the target audience a tease on what is involved and also makes them want to see more and even play it, this create great excitement and tension for the release date.
This video game trailer engages the target audience by showing the car racing game lovers actual in game footage of all the different sceneries and cars racing instead of it just being one car with only one scenery and being the same all the way through, showing a range also helps engage the audience for the car lovers that only like specific cars e.g. supercar fans, rally car fans, nascar fans etc so that they aren't defined for just one style of car.

                                             Music Video

This music video is by the artist the goes under the name Joji, the purpose this music video is to promote Joji's new album and also to entertain the audience. This music video can be accessed on youtube via tablets, laptops, mobile phones and computers. This makes the video very easily accessible for the fans to view on the go whenever they would like to.
This video creates excitement for the target audience by having Joji laying down with naked girls dancing on him while being covered in money, this creates excitement for the men as they will look towards the women as sexual objects seen as Joji has created the story line of living life like a pimp. This video also creates excitement as the fans get to see how Joji lives through short clips of him during his tour and what he gets unto in life.
This video engages the audience as the men get to see naked women all the way through the video, this creates male gaze which makes the men look to women as sexual objects and nothing more, However Joji does not create a good role model for the younger audience members by doing this, it will bring them up to look at women as no more than objects belonging to men.
The target audience for this video should be 18+ as they have explicit images of naked women, this should not be seen by any younger as this is what the regulatory bodies have made age ratings for in other videos, however the video is very easily accessible for anybody and won't hold children back from viewing this content.

Music Video

This is a music video by the artist Mac Demarco, the purpose of this music video is to promote the song and the new album it is featured on, but the main purpose is to show the fans what Mac Demarco's kind of woman actually is and to show the fans its fine to dress however you want and to be yourself as he is dressed as a woman with make up and lipstick on.
This video creates excitement for the audience because Mac was a very quiet artist at this point in 2013 that no one really knew much about, so the audience get to see Mac in a fast paced video with so much to look at after him going quiet for so long.
This video engages the audience by showing Mac dressed as a woman and also running around naked towards the end, this gives the audience humorous content while also being shown a story inside the video of a message being sent out that men don't have to be represented as masculine anymore and that they should be comfortable with who they are as long as they are happy with themselves it doesn't matter what others think.
The target audience for this video is 14+ as this is the age that teenagers start to find their own likings and preferences on living life for themselves, also the clothes they wear and their appearance is varied on how they see life and the hobbies/interests they have, so Mac can target these people to tell them it is okay to be different and no one else matters because they aren't you and you don't have to make other people happy through your own appearance.

Film Trailer

This is the film trailer of 'Mid90s' directed by Jonah Hill, this trailer shows clips from the movie he has directed on the skateboarding scene through out the 90s. The trailer is a structured as the film goes along bringing all the characters slowly. This was his first ever film he directed and released.
This trailer uses fast pasted cuts to bring in characters, emotions and locations through out the films, this creates suspense and teasers of different scenes in the film to engage the audience to viewing the trailer till the end. The music played through out this film trailer is the Wu-Tang Clan, these are a thuggish hip-hop styled group, this will accompany the thuggish acts the skaters are committing through out this film and connotes these skaters are young hooligans and don't tend to behave themselves.
This film trailers target audience is mainly males that have a more masculine side as these skaters are a group of different emotions and personalities such as misbehaviour, anger, fighting and not really caring about how they treat others. This makes the trailer aimed at males as stereotypically these are the actions of masculinity instead of being aimed at females that behave and always care about how their actions act upon others in the long run.
This video has made it very teasing for the audience as they play clips right from the start of the film to the very end including violence, happiness, anger and skateboarding, this makes it very appealing to the target audience but also very teasing as if they would want to view the whole film they would have to buy the movie or go to the cinema, bringing the company a higher income which is what they are aiming for in this whole trailer, the point of the trailer being to bring in an income but also to advertise the film in time for its release so that the target audience are ware of the whole project crated by Jonah Hill.
The trailer also uses techniques of close ups on the main characters/actors to show the target audience who the main characters/actors are and who they should look out for when watching the movie as these are the people the movie is built around and also more relevant if they are shown bigger/more masculine than the other cast members throughout the trailer.

L02: Treatment

Unit 15 Music video

SINES by Sixteen Squares

Genre – 90s rave music video

Target Audience:
The target audience for this music video is 16+ but also very heavily aimed at 40+ year olds as this is how old the ravers that actually experienced the 90s Acid House raves are now. Both male and female as its a genre loved by everyone as the seen was well known for its happiness and love for everyone, everything and the music. I have not only aimed it at the actual middle aged ravers but also the 16+ year olds as it will help advertise the music to show its not burning out or fading away and also show the older listeners that it is still going, maybe even be the next rebirth of the scene as we have jazz coming back up, punk and synth pop coming back to life, could this be a sign that acid house is next on the list?

Character Breakdown:
The main characters are both the artist Sixteen Squares and Charles Manson both white middle aged men that have doing there own thing on the low, the artist being Sixteen Squares keeping his identity hidden and not letting the outside world in, hence the location being hidden. This also relates to Charles Manson as he has his own cult 'The Manson Family' that lived in a quiet house and kept themselves to themselves without anyone else coming in. The main character of the music video is Charles Manson , Charles Milles Manson was an American criminal and cult leader. In mid-1967, he formed what became known as the Manson Family. Manson's followers committed a series of nine murders at four locations in July and August 1969 and In 1971, he was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder for the deaths of seven people.

Visual elements:
· Lighting
· Black light
· Masks
· Actor
· Lasers
· Music equipment with light elements
Audio elements:
· Music
· Soundtrack

Outline:

The music video is going to be based around Charles Manson this will fit well with the song because on the samples the artist has used of Charles Mansons voice from an interview he did after he was caught and arrested. There is no lyrics for the song so the visuals are a vital thing for the video , the beginning starts off with the artist in a mask using his music equipment a gradually throughout the video different short clips to do with Charles Manson also clips of his doing the interview will be played when the samples come up in the song , the clips will be lip-synced to the song so there is an overall flow throughout the video.

The main idea of the music video was to create a video that displayed what the songs meaning in visual form in turn showing the story of Charles Manson and how the song represents all of this. The song we made a video for was buy the artist Sixteen Squares who also features in the video with a vendetta mask on to connote the mystery and unknown about Manson , the song also has no lyrics which worked to our advantage as it allows the viewer to appreciate the story of the video and allow them to be taken on a audio and visual journey.

Rational:

Primary and Secondary Research:
The different research we did for planning and getting inspiration for our video, included watching old 90s rave music videos and music videos in that genre/era so we could capture the right feel that correlates too the whole acid house scene. we then started viewing videos of Charles mason so that we could include all the right video clips that linked with him , for example we read up on him and found out that he believed the song helter-skelter by the Beatles was a subliminal message from them too him , so from this research we added a few short clips on a helter-skelter into out music video.

Equipment and resources:
· Camera (For recording the artist to feature in the video)
· Artist (To feature in the video)
· Video editing software (To string together all the clips of video and to add the soundtrack)
· Lights (To add an extra visual element to the video)
· Mask (For the artist to wear to fit with the aesthetic of the video)

Budget:
The budget for the music video 'SINES' was £0, free. The artist was very happy to do work on the project with us for free and we already have equipment and software free of use, this was helpful for us as we had this project handed to us, given to us and we took it. This was also really nice to look back on and see that art is free, creating art for free is still possible, money doesn't always have to be the key element of production if you have the right links, which we did.

L04: Audio Levels

Here is me checking the audio levels, I have not used Audacity as the song was mastered and produced by an artist inside of a studio, this means all levels, samples, beats rhythms etc are perfectly together and not being distorted in any place.

I had to turn the music down towards the end and fade in and out so that the visuals could come init the same time, I also chopped the visual so that they could match the beat of the song and change in time, meaning the shots would change on the kick or snare of the song. Even in the bridge the song would change to the bassline for full effect.

L04: Evidence of Editing

This is my first stage of creating the music video for my client, this first screenshot is a clip being put into time with the song so that when Charles Manson talks in the interview it is placed at the same time as when he speaks in the song, this helps me match the codes and conventions of a real music video as it creates suspense before the song has properly started, like old school rave music videos.

I am happy with how my final promo has turned out, the footage I have used are clips such as:
- Charles Manson
- Chinese cat
- Music Equipment
- Artist Up Close
- Artist On Studio
- Flashing Lights
- Helter Skelter
The editing I have used with tools are:
- Fast Pace Cuts - Razor Tool
- Faster Clips - Clip Duration Time Quicker
All these have made the final promo for my client a lot stronger and more appealing as they all help catch the gritting spooky look of Charles Manson and what he was about, creating an eerie atmosphere for the view.
In this screenshot I have used the 'Razor Tool', this allows me to cut one clip in into two so that I can make the video change scene in time to the beat of the song so that the music video is in time, this follows codes and conventions as every music video has to/is in time to the song, this creates excitement and suspense through out the video

In this screenshot I have used the 'Type Tool' which has allowed me to write onto the timeline, I have written the artist and song make 'Sixteen Squares' - 'SINES' this shows the viewers/target audience who the song is by and what the song is called, this follows codes and conventions as many artists music videos also do this during the intro.

L02: Legal & Ethical

Legal
issues are law enforced issues that must be followed otherwise legal action can be taken against you. For example, the song we used for our music video was not owned by us and therefore we had no right to use it without the owners. Since we personally knew the artist of the song we were able to get permission to use it, however if we had failed to gain these permissions and still created the video then we wouldn't be adhering to copyright law and could be punished with a large fine.
Ethical issues are moral issues that should be followed to protect the public who consume the product. For instance, we wanted the video to be quite creepy and make people feel on edge, especially with the Charles Manson based theme - but we had to be careful to not use any footage that may be too scary for younger viewers, because even though our target audience is 18+ it is possible for young children to see the video and if the video is too scary for them then parents would be likely to report the video and try to get it taken down. In order to avoid this we decided not to include any violent or graphic scenes within the video and stick to mostly filming the musical equipment in the video but just added a few small creepy scenes like the video of Charles Manson and of the artist of the song wearing an unsettling mask.
The BBFC (Brittish Board of Film Classification) determines the age certificate of any audio-visual content. Our music video would receive a 12A age certificate, because there is no inappropriate or graphic content featured within the video, but young children may find the video scary and distressing because of the creepy mask worn by the artist. Since the video contains footage of a murderer and cult leader this may also cause problems with parents who don’t want their children exposed to this kind of footage despite there not being any graphic footage. This age certificate will warn the parents of the type of content featured in the video and give the choice of whether to allow their children to view it or not.
OfCOM (Office of Communications) regulates TV, radio and video on demand services in the UK. They deal with any problems/reports that the public have.

L02: Gantt Chat

L02: Moodboard

These images on the moodboard I have created represent the genre and audience as hippies of the 90s, nothing but happiness, bright colours, psycadellic graphics and everyone enjoying themselves during the time of acid house music. This shows the genre is for dance lovers, people passionate about the acid culture and everything always being bright colours such as pinks, yellows, blues etc, this connotes it was always a happy scene/genre for the youths of the 90s instead of being bleak colours like blacks, greys and whites etc.
