L03: Setting up production material

L04: Drafts

Draft 1

This is a draft, almost a sketch with getting ideas together for the music video. Having a play with clips and out takes to get a feel for what I want the video to look like based on the narrative while also getting feedback from the artist so that we know we are on the same page. Having close ups of the artist in the mash and his music equipment as we planned. I completely changed this intro as it now starts with Charles Manson and barely contains any of these clips as they were just out takes and unusable.

Draft 2

This draft is the first containing many clips of Charles Manson and the Manson family which links to the narrative and music as there is samples of Manson throughout the song talking about what he did and why he did it, also the Manson family girls laughing in parts is exactly where the clips of the girls come into place to give that bleakness and darkness as the video takes you on a journey.

This is my final draft of using clips that are uncut and unedited during the live recording of 'SINES' looking back on my video all together I have now seen all the clips I have an haven't used and exactly why to show I have followed the codes and conventions of a real music video and also what made a good video into a great video.

L03: Planning Matching Production

This is a drawing from my storyboard next to a screenshot of the actual music video I made for Sixteen Squares, this relates perfectly as and matches what I have planned as I drew out and noted the a close up of the artist in a Guy Fawkes mask to keep his identity hidden. I had also planned the shot types which helped when recording because I knew exactly what I needed to shoot

This is the shot that related to the Charles Manson part on my storyboard as I explained I wanted to use short copyright free clips of Manson coming in and out throughout the duration of the music video, this relates to the song as Sixteen Squares had sampled many different parts of Manson talking in interviews so what better way to use this to my advantage than to add clips of him talking in the same time.

This is the extreme close-up of the artists music equipment in his home studio, I have decided to take this shot into the actual music video from planning it on my storyboard as it shows the viewers how the artist makes the song and what equipment he has his hands on throughout the duration of the video

L02: Initial Planning and Performance Ideas

Notes:
  • Artist making music
  • Artist sat chilling out
  • Music Equipment
  • Studio
  • Ornaments

Narrative Ideas:
  • Fade in and out of clips of the Manson's and the artist
  • Have the artist making music with a low opacity video of Charles Manson in the background
For the narrative I want to have my artist playing on his music equipment and fade in and out of videos of the Manson's, for example when Charles Manson talks ill play the video of him talking t the same time so it fits in perfectly and then when the girls from the Manson family laugh I will have videos of them in the same time all so its keeping the same flow throughout the video.

L04: Following Codes and Conventions

Sixteen Squares playing the song on his music equipment in the studio, this also links to the music video I have looked at which is Altern 9 - E-Vapor-8, a 90s rave song that blew during the illegal house rave scene. The conventions I have followed are showing the artist playing on his equipment up close. This also shows that its the actual artist playing the song, not just a rip off of him pretending to play, even though the song has already been created he is using the equipment in a live recording which is what was used for the music video, it also shows he knows what he is doing and exactly why he is doing it.

Music equipment shown to show what the artist using to make the song, this is done by Altern-8. This shows the viewer how the sounds are actually made and also what the artist is doing to make these sounds, this is important as this is an electronic song hence 'Acid House' meaning its mostly analogue equipment which also shows the artist is very talented and knows what he is doing. This also shows the superiority of the music studios, in a way sort of showing off what equipment the artist has his hands on, almost like a battle of gear heads. Artists sharing what they have to make themselves look professional and serious.

Artist wearing mask to keep his face hidden, this is done by Altern-8 as well to keep their identity hidden, the conventions I have followed here are keeping the artist anonymous through out the video, there should be nothing all that gives away who the artist is. I have chosen to use these clips in the music video as these are all things that are done in music videos for famous artists, showing them playing the music and also showing the artist, the artist is known for being anonymous and not showing his face on any social medias or on any album covers so keeping his identity hidden was a huge part of the music video. I am happy with how it turned out and how I have followed the codes and conventions as it makes the video reach the best of its ability to look professional, dark, spooky and musical.
